Hans

Dr. Hans Albert Hammerle
06.03.1938 — 11.11.2025
“Slow travel, not fast living”

Hans was born on March 6, 1938, in Munich. Soon after, he moved with his parents to Vienna, where his Tyrolean father, Erwin, worked as an engineer. In 1940, Erwin refused to join the NSDAP. Consequently, he had to leave his secure position at an aerial photography company and was sent to war.

He therefore brought his wife and the then two-year-old Hans to relatives in St. Jakob am Pillersee. His daughter, Hans's sister Lore, lived with relatives in Kitzbühel during the war.

Hans Hammerle in his childhood
Young Hans – humble and strong

Hans was a child of the war. He often told stories about having only two pairs of trousers that had to be taken good care of. He loved to preserve things; little was always enough, and frugality was his preference. Old, hard, or as he called it, “crispy” bread, a little butter, a fried egg. It was easy to cook a satisfying meal for him; Hans was humble.

When the war ended in 1945, his father suddenly stood at the door. Hans did not recognize him...

Together they moved to Reith bei Seefeld, where they find a house and finally became a united family again. At the age of 10, shortly after everyone was reunited, Hans lost his sister Lore in an accident at Wildmoossee. He spoke of her throughout his life, never forgot her, and always looked forward to seeing her again one day. It is comforting to imagine that they are now reunited.

Hans took on a lot of responsibility for his grieving parents from then on. He spent his youth in Bregenz, graduated from the commercial academy there, and studied economics in Innsbruck – always striving to meet his parents' expectations.

Had it been up to his preferences and talents, Hans would have loved to study something creative – architecture, photography – perhaps even in America, where he traveled as a bachelor. But to let his parents “lose” another child was something he could not put them through.

From Tourism Director to Passionate Teacher

He ultimately wrote his doctoral thesis on “Tourism in the Brixental” and received two job offers as a Tourism Director – a brand new profession at the time – in Kitzbühel or Kirchberg. He chose Kirchberg. He managed these affairs for 8 years before switching to become a teacher at the St. Johann Tourism School. A profession he lived with great joy and passion until his retirement.

He shared stories from his life and professional experience with his students – cheat sheets amused him, and he considered them a contribution to learning. As a dedicated and lovable person, he remains in the memories of many colleagues and students.

Hans & Margret

During his university years, in 1965, he met Margret in Westendorf. He was a tour guide; Margret was a Dutch tourist – and soon, his tourist. He quickly conquered her heart with crazy ideas:

Im roten Triumph
1,000 km for love in a red Triumph

He drove 1,000 km to Holland in his red Triumph and had himself locked in a chest to surprise her. Many funny and special stories can be told about Hans and Margret. This year, they had been together for 60 years.

3 children, 3 grandchildren, and many dogs accompanied Hans through his life: Nina, Tobias, Laura, Lorelie, Emil, and Yona. His grandson Tim and the dogs Seppi, Schneewittchen, Daisy, and August are already waiting for him in heaven.

A Rock in the Storm

Hans was an active and creative man. He was one of the first in the area to build a winter garden; cesspits were converted into wine cellars, a pizza oven was placed in the garden, natural stone walls were laid, motorcycles and tractors were cherished and maintained, cameras and watches were collected, and there was always tinkering around the house. At 78, he still helped plan and build a sustainable wooden house – realizing a dream: The Green Home!

Hans loved the mountains, enjoyed being out in nature, and loved skiing. Often without a helmet – the hairstyle had to sit right, and nothing should stand in the way of a winter tan. He was a pillar of strength, always had a solution ready, was agile in his thoughts, quick-witted, and loved dry and dark humor.

A surgery shortly after his 80th birthday, which he barely survived, took away his independence. He spent his last years quietly – first in Kirchberg, then in Mils, and later in Hall at the 'Haus zum guten Hirten'.

Hans passed away on November 11 – he didn't like fuss, big celebrations, and: no carnival!

Jokes, sunshine, and chocolate ice cream were his highlights in recent years, alongside visits from family and friends. And he loved singing his favorite songs until the very end – especially the cheerful ones!

Light a candle for Hans 🕯️
